ช่วงนี้ เป็นอีกช่วงปีการศึกษา ที่สถานศึกษาทั่วประเทศต้องหาวิธีการตั้งรับในการจัดการศึกษาในสถานศึกษาของตนเอง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการจัดการเรียนการสอนแบบ On Site หรือ On-Air และ Online วันนี้มีเกร็ดความรู้คำหรือความหมายของ online กัน ซึ่งจริงๆแล้วหลายคนก็ยังเขียนคำนี้ด้วยความแตกต่างกันอีก สองรูปแบบ คือ on-line และ on line
ซึ่งคำ ทั้งสามคำนี้ เกิดขึ้นในเวลาใกล้เคียงกัน โดย on-line เกิดขึ้นมาก่อนคำอื่นๆ คำว่า on-line กล่าวกันว่า เริ่มใช้ในปี 1915 เป็นคำที่กล่าวอ้างถึงรถไฟที่กำลังแล่นหรือเคลื่อนที่อยู่บนราง หลังจากนั้นปี 1945 คำว่า on-line ถูกนำไปใช้ในเรื่องอื่นๆอีก
ทุกวันนี้ เมื่อพูดถึงโลกของอินเทอร์เน็ต คนส่วนใหญ่จะใช้ online กับ on-line ซึ่งหมายถึงบางสิ่งที่อยู่บนอินเทอร์เน็ต หรือการใช้งานที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเทคโนโลยีเว็บและเครือข่ายอินเทอร์เน็ต แต่คนส่วนใหญ่จะนิยมใช้คำว่า online มากที่สุด on-line คำๆนี้ จึงค่อยๆหายไปจากเรื่องราวกับเทคโนโลยีเว็บ
ส่วน on line ก็จะเป็นคำที่ใช้งานควบคู่กับคำว่า off line โดยหมายถึงการควบคุม (operating) ระบบหรือตัวเครื่องจักร

When do we use “online”?
Anytime. “Online” is the recommended word to use when referring to a connection to the Internet. It is a common word and all English guides/dictionaries accept this form officially.
Online is slightly newer and is much more commonly used today.
When do we use “on-line”?
Almost never today. Not that it would be wrong, but as mentioned above, “online” is far more commonly used and preferred by all official sources. The only situation when “on-line” is recommended is if you are trying to communicate in the old English style, maybe with a person used to the 90’s English language who loved those times. Otherwise, just go for “online” to make sure you are correct.
Is it online or on-line? Online and on-line both mean connected to the Internet, and they can be used as either an adjective or an adverb.
On-line is quickly dying out and should probably be avoided.
When do we use “on line”?
If a machine or piece of equipment comes on line, it starts operating. If it is off line, it is not operating.
The Energy Secretary hopes to bring on line a safer new tritium production reactor.
The new machine will go on line in June.
Every second her equipment was off line cost the company money.
In summary, use online unless you have a good reason to do otherwise.
